28th Legislative District Community Development Corporation

Current Priority:

MLK Project

Project Description:

The objective of the MLK Commercial Development project is to build an urban fit commercial/retail enterprise that will further stimulate business opportunities and job creation within an area of downtown that had experienced severe decline in past years, but is now experiencing a resurrection throughout a corridor that has historically been identified as the "black business district" in the Chattanooga community. With the advent of urban renewal projects of the sixties and seventies, many minority owned businesses in this community, which included commercial establishments, professional offices, entertainment centers, as well as residential houses, either went into decline or were totally dismantled. The project itself consists of a 20,000 square foot two-story mix-use condominium complex. The west end of the development site which intersects Houston and MLK Boulevard is a quarter of an acre and is comprised of 10,849 square feet for development as ground floor retail and second floor housing. The housing is projected at 1200-1400 square feet per unit (totaling 10,800 square feet)

The Commercial portion of the MLK project will be a Veterans Small Business Opportunity Center, which will include a privately funded help desk that provides business development assistance for Veteran and Service Disabled Veteran entrepreneurs.  It will also include a state of the art Service-Disabled Veteran owned call center, along with space for emerging Veteran owned businesses.
